DOING AMERICA
WITH
BOB DAMRON
Sam Houston was a harddrinking, ambitious, colorful renegade Governor of two states and president of the short-lived Republic of. Texas. Aptly named after him, these same qualities personify this handsome, sprawling
megalopolous of high-rise buildings, splashing fountains, gracious homes and green
lawns. Houston, with over 1,250,000 inhabitants is the largest city in Texas, and ranks sixth in the nation.
The generally moderate year around climate is a lot like Los Angeles, but much more humid. Major attractions include the Astrodome, Rice University, San Jacinto Monument, Battleship Texas, N.A.S.A. Manned Spacecraft Center, and University of Houston. This large inland port is about a forty five minute drive from Galveston, a popular Gulf Coast resort, which I shall cover in a future article.
With some sixty or more gay pleasure palaces, you should have no problem finding what you are looking for. Discos tend to be somewhat flamboyant, and in some cases flambeed as several of them have gone up in flames. Tops for the last couple of years is the Old Plantation at 2020 Kipling, just east of Shephard. It is impressive with four bars, game room, shops and wall-to-wall bodies. The "O.P.'s" clientelle come in all shapes, sizes, ages and sexes... but mostly young, compact and attractive.
Dear Sirs,
Popular also are the Midnite Sun at 534 Westheimer and Cuddles at 4714 Main, which.
also feature weekly drag shows. Less promising is Soixante Quinze, now a private club. All discos get a fair share of gals, but the most popular lesbian bar is Just Marion & Lynn's at 817 Fairview. Ms. Take II looks like a proving ground for lady
wrestlers.
The Locker Room at 1732 Westheimer (use side entrance) is 'supposedly to leather what the 'O.P.' is to the boogie bunch. Here again, the crowd is often diversified, but the bar, pool area and outdoor patio is usually packed.
Two 'hot' new men's cruise
bars have just opened. The Montrose Mining Co. at 805 Pacific and Brazos River Bottom at 2400
Brazos. At the latter you will see more stetsons and keychains than you do in Dallas ... and so what if they aren't all real cowboys? Last year's super cruise bar, the Silver Bullet burned but may be re-opening? Mary's is on again, off again.
Friendly neighborhood watering spas include Our Place at 1419 Richmond, InsideOutside at 1318 Westheimer,
Galleon at 2303 Richmond, Briar Patch at 2294 Holcombe and Houston's oldest (and tiredest) downtown type bar, the Exile on Bell, just off Main.
Surprisingly, there are no gay hotels in a city of this size. I

usually stay at the Rodeway Inn, 3135 Southwest Freeway, convenient to the bars and with a cruisy late night parking lot. C.B.C.'s Club Houston is a very good bath, and you are apt to see many bartenders here after hours. It is located at 2205 Fannin. Midtowne Spa at 3100 Fannin has also become a big success. Although I haven't been there yet, I hear the 2306 Club is fun, especially if you are into 'kinky' sex.
For dining, Somewhere at 1525 Westheimer is not much on decor but serves good food, as does Auntie Mame's Deli (open 24 hours) at 2278 W. Holcombe. More elegant but mixed are Harrigan's, Don's Le Patois, Petite Europe, and Courtland's. Among the better 'straight' restaurants are Brennan's, Charley's 517, Look's Sir-Loin, Maxim's, Tony's, Vargo's, Win-
dow Box and Ye Olde College Inn. Everyone goes to the House of Pie's at 3112 Kirby for camping, cruising and coffee after hours or to the Avalon Drug Co. for brunch on Saturday and Sundays.
Last, but not least are Houston's notorious book stores, including After Dark, 3400 Travis, Adonis at 1407 Richmond, Adultz at 714 Alabama and Studz at 1132
Alabama. Most are open 24
hours and can be 'wilder' than the baths. Besides porno flicks,
dark cubicles, glory holes, orgy rooms, peep shows etc. they also sell books and other erotic paraphernalia.
'H' is for Houston. It also stands for Handsome, Hot,
Humpy, Hairy, Hung, Hell-raising Honchos. This is one of my favorite cities and I think you will like it too. Have a happy time and I'm sure you'll be Houston' saying 'Hello whenever you can.
